LAFD Responds to Ill and Injured from LAX Shooting

    date.pngFriday, November 01, 2013 | user.png Posted by LAFD

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Fire Department aided six persons ill or injured as the direct result of a shooting incident at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Friday morning, said LAFD Battalion Chief Armando Hogan. Hogan explained that five patients were taken promptly by ambulance to area hospitals, while a sixth person declined medical care.

Summoned by airport officials at 9:28 AM on November 1, 2013 to Terminal 3, Fire Department personnel arrived quickly to an active shooter incident, to find the assailant quickly neutralized and scene secured by law enforcement officials.

During the prompt triage, treatment and transport of the five patients, LAFD joined a Unified Command with the Los Angeles Airport Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, as the airport premises were combed for additional hazards. With none discovered, LAFD transitioned to the role of an "assisting agency", as law enforcement officials continued their active investigation.

In the twelve hours that followed, LAFD strategically deployed more than 125 personnel on a rotating basis to serve the tens of thousands who were isolated within or refrained from reentering the 3,425 acre airport property. Working closely with American Red Cross volunteers, firefighters distributed water, snacks and information to as many persons as possible.

Throughout the day, LAFD Paramedics medically evaluated an additional 27 persons not involved with the shooting, who suffered illness or minor injury while evacuated from, sheltered within or waiting to deplane into terminals at the nation's third busiest airport. Thirteen of those persons were taken to areas hospitals by LAFD Ambulance for further evaluation.

No further details were made available regarding the age, gender, condition, affiliation or circumstances involving those who were ill or injured.

Those seeking additional information are asked to contact the Los Angeles Airport Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security - Transportation Security Administration and LAX Airport Administration.

  2. I think Rural/Metro will be pretty secure in the long run, especially with the bankruptcy filing allowing them to get out of some debt. On the EMS side, they hold a lot of good contracts that other providers and cities can't handle.

I think the Fire part of their business nowadays in very expensive for them to provide, and that's where they are taking a lot of the hit. I see them getting out of that in the future.

I can't see anyone buying them out, either. AMR doesn't seem to be actively pursuing much lately and has dumped some contracts and other things where they don't make a good profit.

  3. A Transportation Security Administration agent was reportedly killed and several more people injured when a gunman opened fire Friday morning at Los Angeles International Airport.

Per the official press conference at 11:52 PT:

LAX World Airport PD Chief Gannon: About 0920hrs Pacific Time an active shooter situation occured. Suspect armed with assault rifle (per PD Chief) inside LAX Terminal 3. Shooter started firing before and through security checkpoint and continued deep into Terminal 3. Officers followed the suspect, who was still actively shooting, engaged and shot the suspect/shooter.  Multiple victims shot.  Suspect in custody. Unknown fatalities, working with FD to rectify. Only one shooter believed involved in incident.

LAFD Chief Featherstone: LAFD treated 7 patients, transported 6 individuals, 100 Fire/EMS personnel committed to an Major Emergency MCI incident, LA Emergency Operations Center operating at Level 1

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck: FBI handling investigation, with LAX PD and LAPD assisting

FBI: Agent David Bowdich: Will give very little facts today, no information will be given about victims, today, evidence response and other specialized teams enroute to LAX.

City Councilman: Commended the unified command

  4. With Rural Metro recently filing for bankruptcy, many are saying this will be good for the company.

I have, however, heard rumors that they may dump their fire protection contracts, as they are money losing.

If this is true, are their certain cities preparing for this, or attempting to start their own FD?

  5. Does Seagrave still have a presence out West?

I know for a while they were winning LAFD bids, but that was a while ago. And I know departments like Burbank are very loyal to them.

But are their Seagraves still being ordered and delivered?

  8.
LAFD Captain Collapses, Dies While on Duty

It's with deep regret that we pass on from the Los Angeles Fire Department that a City of Los Angeles Fire Captain has died while on duty.

Early this morning, Los Angeles Firefighters discovered on-duty Fire Captain/Paramedic Matthew G. McKnight unresponsive after his unwitnessed collapse inside the LAFD Metropolitan Fire Communications Center. Captain McKnight, age 51 - and a 31 year veteran of the LAFD, was last seen at 0055 hours near the conclusion of a busy five hour watch, where he directly supervised eleven Firefighter/Dispatchers.

Despite an exhaustive effort by colleagues who immediately performed CPR, applied a defibrillator and instituted advanced life support measures, Captain McKnight proved beyond medical help and was declared dead Monday morning at the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.

Captain McKnight, a resident of Thousand Oaks, California is survived by his wife, teenage daughter and pre-teen son, as well as two brothers who are active-duty members of the LAFD.

Thanks to LAFD's BrianH for the details. Our condolences to all affected. RIP.

  9.  Worth the read.

The other day, someone whom I adore made mention to someone else how, ‘they didn’t like cops’, because they get to do things the rest of us are not privileged to do only because they’re the law.

This common paradox within our society today intrigued me to the point of wanting to talk about it in a few insignificant and meaningless words.

  10. Adam-12 is one of my favorite shows. It was very much like "Emergency", but for the LAPD. Same creators, similar time period.

I just watched this powerful, awesome episode for the first time yesterday. Although it is almost 40 years old, the words spoken, most especially at the end of the episode haven't changed one bit.  What do you think?

"Log 105: Elegy for a Pig" (a.k.a. simply "Elegy for a Pig") is the 60th episode of the television series Adam-12.

This episode, which focuses on the life of a recently killed police officer, is notable for being a major departure from the series' usual "day in the life" format.

The show is presented as a tribute to police officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

In keeping with the show's somber tone, the opening and closing credits are done differently than usual: the theme music is absent, and the white credits are shown against a black background. Also, the opening credits are spoken aloud by the voice of series co-creator Jack Webb, who finishes with, "For the next 30 minutes, Elegy for a Pig." There is also no dialogue, only voice-over narration from Martin Milner.

    Synopsis;

Officers Malloy (Martin Milner) and Reed (Kent McCord) are attending the funeral of slain policeman Tom Porter (guest star Mark Goddard), who was a friend and academy classmate of Malloy's. In flashbacks, Malloy remembers meeting and working with Porter during their "rookie" years; Porter's marriage to Marge (Rachel Romen) and the birth of their two children; and Porter being killed while chasing a robbery suspect.
