  1. it is always better to go to the next exit and make the turnaround, that is protocol in most depts. here in orange county and is done for a number of safety reasons 1 . most of the newer rigs are 100 inches wide or more with full length doors which means you need to be off the wall at least 2-3 feet on the engineers side in order to exit the rig.this will put the rig not only in one lane but partially into another. 2 . your captain and ff on that side need to exit into traffic. 3 you do not have any protection for your ff's treating the patients on the opposite side, I don't trust a chp or pd cruiser blocking traffic. most depts. in the oc run duel response so you will have 1 unit each direction this allows the other unit to make the turnaround without delay in treatment
  2. these will go along with the 2 engines and 1 tiller they put in service last year. also laguna beach just put a pierce velocity in service as engine 1
  3. no this was all mayor garcetti's doing, he has stated he want's to restore the budget, did not hear anything about re-opening closed companies. that's what this whole study is about re-allocation of resources, going to smaller apparatus on certain calls, and of course opening up more ra and ambo units across the city
  4. interesting reading, there are some good idea's presented , and some not so good idea's . on thing is for sure , this is going to start a clash between the union and the city over certain options. we all know the mayor and upper brass are all about saving money and doing more with less. I know there is talk about restoring the budget but we all know they are going to lean heavily on the ems side when it comes to spending the money
  5. I agree, the health care system in California is being heald togeather with a piece of thread. sooner or later that thread will break and disaster will follow. you think er wait times are bad now. someone said build more hospitals, do you have any idea what it cost to build, equip, and staff a hospital,,, not cheap my friend . there have been 2 or 3 that have closed in the la area in the last few years, why, people abuse the 911 system, looking for a free ride and then with no insurance they skip out on the bill
  6. seagrave, thanks for clearing that up, it looked like a reflection to me, my eyesite ain't what it used to be , getting old I guess, anyway my bad
  7. seagrave that looks like a reflection coming off the diamond plate cover on the a/c unit. it would not make sense to put a scene light there as it would be blocked by the rooftop lightbar facing forward. most depts. have installed brow lights on the front of the cab above the windshield and below the lightbar
  8. I don't think he needed a directive from a higher command , the law is on the books and usually officers don't need permission to enforce. there are officers that are by the book people, they have no life and as such study the penal code and motor vehicle code books from front to back, top to bottom and enforce every rule in it. I have seen chp officers pull fire rigs out on company inspection into the roadside inspection sites and go over the rigs with a fine tooth comb. most le officers get along with fire dept personel and as such everything flows smoothly. but I am sure there are officers out there that have an ax to grind with the fd's. something we will just have to deal with when it happens
  9. ok guys nobody agree's with what happened , but it did. to put this thing to rest ca penal code 409.3 states that law enforcement has the command of the scene no matter what we believe. it most instances the system works and incidents are handled without any hitches. every now and then there will be a le officer that wants to assert his power and this happens. the chula vista fire chief and chp command have have resolved this incident even tho they are not releasing details which tells me there is more to this story, it s all water under the bridge
  10. guys, I am not all that fond of chp, had a few run -ins with them myself. but let's wait for ALL the facts to be published. there is something missing from this report, where was this engineer's captain , he should have been there defending the engineer. did the officer ask the engineer to re-position the truck nicely, did he have an attitude with the officer,(would not be the first time a firefighter mouthed off to a le officer). I know this pisses a lot of people off, but remember if an officer tells someone to put their hands behind their back and cuffs them , you must comply, it doesn't matter if your a rookie firefighter of a chief officer it's the law . let's let his play out
  11. I think the los angeles facility they are referring to is acutually the alf /freightliner service center which is located In Fontana , about 40 mlies east of la
  12. not to many depts. out here in calif have purchased them in the last few years as the rumor of alf closing has been floating for a while. la city was getting ready to go out to bid on tillers but I guess there will be one less bid. I have family on the job in philly and they received the last 3 ladder trucks from alf
  13. well there will be one less bid for the new trucks. American la france closed it's doors today at 5 pm forever. sources are saying there was no warning, the told the employees at the end of their shift 'don't return to work next week' , damn crappy way to find out you no longer have a job
  14. fs46 nobody is disputing that the task force and light forces work for lafd. they were a great concept that came as a result of the watts riots. fast forward to the 21st century. dragging a 200 series around behind a ladder truck is very costly, you have a 350,000 dollar rig with 2 guys on it, mileage, wear and tear, diesel fuel, insurance, equipment. it all add's up. I am not for eliminating the 200 series, but with 85 % of calls being medical, they are becoming harder and harder to justify.
  15. I hear what everybody is saying, but you can bet mayor garcetti, and his staff will be looking at other local depts. as well as other big city depts. such as seattle, Portland san Francisco an so on to see how they do things and if it works. I am not saying this is a good fit for lafd , but you can bet they will look at ALL options . with 85% of calls now ems they are looking at re-deployment of resources that give them the most bang for the buck without reducing staffing. we will have to wait as see how this plays out
  16. firepost, why would it not work putting a 4 man engine and 4 man truck in a station together. la county does it, long beach , Glendale , Pasadena as well as most of the so cal cities do it . is it the ideal concept, no. is it what la city is used too, no. are they going to do it, don't know. but it is an option they might look at, eliminate some light and task forces, take the 200 rig staff it with 2 more ff and you have another engine company . la city always needs additional engines, they could be put in new stations or in high call volume stations like 9, 46 . also when ems makes up 85% of the call load there is always a need for more paramedic ra's and 800's . you would not be losing any manpower or loss of jobs, they would just be redistributing the workload to accommodate the call load
  17. fs46, no lawsuit here, assault with a deadly weapon x3 , felony evading a police officer, failure to yield during a pursuit, a felony, driving on the opposite side of the road at a high rate of speed felony , and way too many misdeminor to name
  18. the rigs are hme. but pierce is doing some of the maintenance on them. pierce is also converting 3 of their 2004 crimson tillers to quints, adding a pump, tank and some other features as Anaheim will be placing these units as stand alone paramedic trucks in the near future
  19. chuck, Anaheim purchased 5 type 3 engines from pierce, they are engines 301,308,309,310 and a fifth that has not been assigned yet. I am having trouble uploading a pics . if you go the the website firepics online, then go to so-cal small cities on page 45 there is a pic from monrovia1
  20. found it, just didn't scroll down far enough, sorry , anyway chuck, the new graphics have been around for about 6 months now. they are on the 5 new type 3 engines, and a few of the newer vehicles in the fleet. I assume they will get around to changing all the rigs to the new as money permits
  21. Charles, which pierce site did you see the new truck 8 on. I looked on pierce's main site and flickr page as well as the south coast equiptment page and cannot find it
  22. ricardo, la county and ventura county have has squads forever. for a budget problem city like san diego to implament a squad program would be a massive undertaking. there is the cost of buying and equipping some 30-40 squads plus reserves and where do you get the staffing for them without reducing or eliminating engine or truck companies. very few dpartments have the kind of money to hire somewhere around 60-80 firefighters to staff the squads.
  23. generic is correct, they must bid on the service just the same as everybody else .another factor to consider is budget, correct me if i'm wrong but isn't san diego having budget problems like most cities. if they were selected to provide service, they now must purchase somewhere around 30-40 rigs and several reserves, equip them locate them. then where do you get the manpower to staff these rigs, reduce 4 man rigs to 3 man, that's a sore issue with unions. it is just very hard to start up a service like that when there are already resources in place to handle it
  24. tillers are the way to go in los angeles , no question about that, in most big cities you will see tillers, granted there are a few towers and platforms here and there but tillers are proven to be effective and useful in most places. I have family on the job in philly and they have a couple snorkels and platforms, but ask any of the guys and they will take a tiller hands down over a platform or tower
  25. aerial platforms are not banned in la city, they just choose not to use them. as hp said they are too big for the small streets and alleys of los angeles. the turning radius on a tiller is much better than any platform out there, who wants to make a 10 point turn to get into an alley when a tiller can do it in one. then there is weight issues with the duel rear axle, on a tiller it is much more spread out . then you have a huge overhang either in the front or the rear which has a big kick out. if you look around so-cal as well as most of ca, fire depts. are returning to tillers as opposed to straight frame ladders or platforms because they work well. why would la city fool with one of the concepts that has worked well for them for over 30 years
