rescue51 I think pierce has a good concept here, it will be interesting to see if it works out. but here in califorrnia you will never see rescue tenders like in Arizona, there are several reasons why, first off we can thank prop 13 for downsizing most departments forcing them to do more with less. thus dumping more trades and equiptment on the most staffed units which in most cities is the truck company. here in orange county we have paramedic trucks which in addition to there regular responsibilities also are rescue trucks, usar trucks swift water rescue units . basically rolling tool boxes. then you have city councils which are reluctant to give the fire departments any more money for additional units than they have to. the tiller trucks will continue to get bigger with more equipment being added to them

pierce is already delivering these units, if you go to the pierce site, there is a video of their final inspections on several of them

fireag, pierce does not have any section for in production photo's. the rigs get photographed and posted when they hit the blue floor for final inspection by the purchasing fire dept

the state is buying very few new rigs, my guess is that with consolidations and downsizing of a lot of departments they are turning the rigs back in due to not being able to staff them . also several city departments in both la and orange county are purchasing their own type 3 rigs and staffing them as needed thus creating a surplus of oes rigs

you probally won't see them until well into next year. pierce is just swamped right now. I have a friend who's dept ordered 2 pumpers in September 2013 and just received then in january

it is a typo the current order is for 7 new trucks. the contract is for 10 years, so all new tillers will be purchased from pierce, the current contract with kme expires in 2016. and this tag on contract allows la city to add engines and special vehicles to the order after the kme contract expires. last I heard city was looking to replace some usars and haz mat units

orange is the only city fire dept in orange county not running pierce

seagrave, that's how some do it, but I know that 2 of these cities never got a bid from anyone but pierce, they went to the city and told them this is what we are buying, the maintenance dept likes it, we already have some on the fleet cut us a check. and they did

Anaheim is joining the ranks of the growing number of oc cities waiving the low bid process and buying pierce . this is their 4th pierce. fullerton, Newport beach costa mesa and brea all have rigs on order

based on the fact that kme forgot to include some pricing for parts on the original bid, one can only assume that their bid is going to be even higher now with the new prices. pierce was the low bidder by a few hundred thousand dollars, but they also had a shorter delivery time on the rigs.the bid will probally be awarded in September and we won't see the new rigs until at least October- November of 2015

was the damage to truck 71 that severe that it has to be replaced, or are they just getting it repaired. that truck is not that old.

is san diego running these units 24/7. I know several cities in orange county are now running peek time paramedic squads between the hours of 7am to 7 pm m-f

I have heard that this is a unhappy vendor, that was not chosen. anyway the bid process will be investigated by the city, if no mistakes were made and the bid process was followed correctly, then the city can proceed with the award to pierce. if something is wrong with the bids, they all get thrown out and the process starts all over again. keep in mind the city knows who is questioning the bids (not good for them). this not only cost the city money but time also, so instead of receiving some new trucks in early 2015 you are now looking at late 2015. since we are already in july, if they have to go out to bid, they have to advertise for bids which is usually 30 days or more, open the bids, select a vendor, award the bid , sign a contract and start production . this is not funny if a vendor is doing this just because their feelings are hurt that they did not get picked

way to go lvfd, take it all over, we threw amr out of orange county years ago, unprofessional, huge ego, only cares about the bottom line long response times ,not showing up at calls calling on scene when their not, the list goes on and on

the bid was just awarded this month, I doubt the rigs have even hit the production line yet. my department ordered 2 engines last September and we have not received them yet. they told us engines are running 7-8 months delivery time and ladders around 10 months. my guess you will not see anything until after the first of the year

1965. the mechanics do have their prefrences and you are correct most probally prefer straight beam suspension. that being said the mechanics are not the ones driving the rigs on emergency responses thru crowded congested city streets. we all know how the public drives here in so-cal and most engineers will tell you that the tak 4 makes a huge difference

you are correct, there is a bit more maintenance with tak 4, but I was speaking to the safety aspect of it as far as handling and avoiding accidents ( we all know so-cal residents drive like idiots) it will be nice if city specs it. several depts. here in oc have it on their new tillers and lve it we will have to see if waterguy has the inside scoop

pierce will build anything la city wants, when you place a big order like this. they are getting their foot back in the door. I don't know what the 2015-16 budget has as far as new apparatus but you can be sure pierce will be giving them a good price to add on to the tiller order. and I will check with my neighbor who works for city but I think all the arrow xt's have tak 4 and the guys really like it. kme does not offer it so the they have straight axle.

fireag , the 100 on the bid refers to the length of the ladder not how wide the cab is.however there are arrow xt cabs that are 100 inches wide I am sure they will get them to match the arrow xt engines. also la city is a big fan of the tak 4 suspension which was only offered on arrow xt, dash cf and quantum models up until very recently it can now be had on the valocity

I have a friend looking to buy a home in the heights. he has a few questions about the fd. I know they are a volunteer dept, question 1, do they handle their calls alone with their own rigs or do they gey mutual/auto aid from la county and question 2, do they provide their own paramedic service or use la county medics

the picture you posted is swift water 88. it is a totally different unit , this unit has water rescue equipment , and inflatable boat and pulls a jet ski. a usar unit is a much bigger unit, basically a rolling tool box. if I'm reading you question correctly, your asking if oes has usar's the same size as usar 88 or riverside 3 .

not really true 'quints' nfpa standards for a quint are a minimum of 350 gallons of water and a certain amount of supply line . a lot of cities are now going with this concept as an ' additional resource '. if the truck happens to come upon a vehicle fire or dumpster fire while out on the road , they can start to attack the fire while waiting for an engine company to arrive. but most cities do not run them as first out pieces on fires with the exception of maybe la county fire

most ,if not all rigs are lettered for their respective depts. before they leave the pierce factory, they have a huge art dept there that creates a template, then the gold leaf is applied under specific conditions. my guess is if it had no markings and the ladder main had a sign on it that said pierce and probally a slogan ' like no other' that it's a demo unit being shown off to some dept looking to purchase a ladder truck

didn't Avondale receive 2 new pierce quantums not too long ago, or are they building new stations and staffing with the kme's
