Santee New Engine

7 posts in this topic

Hopefully, Pierce did not get the paint color wrong :D

WOW!  This is seismic in change. Wonder why?  Is it cost?  Will they have to repaint all the other apparatus (doubtful).  I actually like the yellow color rigs, though admit red is the tradition and favored.  Do you know if that rig is going to 4's or 5's, or anything in preparation of a Rancho Fanita development?

Santee's Chief wanted to see red.  And red was supposedly cheaper than yellow paint.  They will not paint the current yellow apparatus; they will retire out staying yellow.  I heard this Engine purchase was because they were going to build a third station.  Probably not put this Engine there, but rather 4's current rig so Station 4 will become all red (with the new truck and moving the brush to the new station).

Sad to see the yellow buses go.

This engine is the replacement for Rescue 5. Rescue 5 has been placed permanently out of service. There will now be two engines out of Station 5.

Is the new engine by chance a rescue-pumper?  Truck 4 does have rescue capacity.  I had a discussion with the former Santee FD chief, maybe 1.5 years ago, and asked him if the rescue (R5) was going to be soon replaced, and he said no, that the T4 will get replaced before R5.  I believe the bucket list for replacements in Santee might go B4 (Brush) first, then T4, then R5.  Santee was once a very progressive department, but it seems to me if you compare them out neighboring agencies, Santee is falling behind with the aging fleet.  I am not sure if the Santee City Council gives the FD the budget they really deserve, considering their growth and tax base revenue.   It would be nice to see a chief that can take on city hall.  I have doubts the new station will be built.  Station 20 (as it was slated through the Heartland numbering system), has been talked about for 20 years.  I don't know if some new development in what I think is Rancho Fanita, might really get the station built, but I have my doubt and think as 'E0001' states, Station 5's will just run two pumpers out of there.  If we have an economic downturn (or worse), we will not see Station 20.

Recall the former chief of Alpine, Downing, was trying to get that station 24 built.  He even order an identical engine from E-One (the 2 Hurricane pumpers), with lettering of E24 since he was told by the board that they'd get his Station 24 built (closer to Harbison Canyon).  It never got done, I heard he go upside-down with board members over it, and they made sure he was ousted or submitted a resignation.

The new Engine is not a Rescue-Engine.  And T4 is being built now. It's expected to be delivered this year if not early next.

Good news 'lkseng3' !!!   Do you know if the new T4 being build is same tiller-type truck, or will it be a quint-tiller?  I heard rumors, though I doubted them, that Santee might have been looking at spec'ing a quint for a new truck to give station 4's a 2nd' rig with water/pump.   I have a feeling Santee won't replace R4 and all the rescue will reside on the current and new T4's.  Santee has had a specialty technical rescue in confined space, but they have much of the cribbing material in a trailer, and I believe they have a pick-up to tow that trailer, so that might be how they keep that expertise resources going.
