LAFD's New Pierce Tillers

Here's a quote from the South Coast Fire Equipment Facebook page:

LAFD's First Pierce Aerial Ladder Trucks
APPLETON, WI - The Los Angeles Fire Department Aerial Ladder Build Team visited Pierce Manufacturing during November 2015 to conduct a detailed formal inspection of the first of 10 aerial ladder trucks built to LAFD specification by the Wisconsin manufacturer. The apparatus pictured should be delivered to the LAFD at the end of December, weather permitting. The installation of additional equipment, including communications gear, will take place during January 2016. The nine additional aerial ladder trucks from this order, built to identical standards, will be delivered to Los Angeles every 4 weeks beginning in March 2016. With excellent care and maintenance provided by members of the Department, these vehicles could see daily around-the-clock service on the streets of Los Angeles through the year 2036. Based upon the Department's needs and available funding, the LAFD is contemplating an order for an additional five of these Pierce aerial ladder trucks. don't think it going to happen this month, the trucks are still in Appleton as of last week, the trucks are driven cross country to California. I am sure the pierce reps want to spend their holidays with their families. they will most likely leave there sometime after the new year. once here in ca they. usually spend about 3-4 weeks at south coast for additional equipment to be added . then on to la shops for radio, mdc and other stuff and then field training. it sounds like it could be march or april before they hit the streets barring any unforseen hold-ups

Why aren't they put on trains or hauled on trucks to be delivered cross country? Doesn't it put mileage on them or something could happen to them if they are driven

I think they are to large to be hauled on trailer.

Generally you want your new apparatus driven to your location as a break in and if anything goes wrong the dealer and Pierce will be able to deal with it. I noticed the aerial ladder is completely level all the way down the trailer which is a little bit different than a normal Pierce tiller. These are beautiful rigs I always loved the Arrow Xt cab as Engineer but hated it as a Captain. The drivers area is very spacious especially with turnout gear on and all switches are easy to access. The Arrow XT is also 96 inches wide which keeps the apparatus very narrow which helps driving in traffic, Pierce Velocity's and Impel's are 100 inches. I work on a 2015 Sutphen engine now which has a 100 inch wide cab and body and you can feel the width even though it sounds minimal. The Captain's seat area is completely two small and that is coming from a 165 pound 5'7 guy.

tnluke is correct, this cross country drive even though it puts about 1800 miles on the rig is used for a 'break in period'. once here at south coast, the fluids will be drained and checked for any contaminants that might indicate a problem. then they are refilled before delivery to the customer. the rig is also checked from top to bottom front to back for any problems that might have arisen from the drive. then south coast will mount any equipment that la city requested to be added to the rig once it arrives here. then it will be delivered to la city shops for radio, mdc , and driver training before hitting the streets.

305, it very well could be at south coast, usually when they arrive there , they are usually parked in the back boneyard area until they are ready to work on them. south coast is a small facility and usually has quite a few new rigs AS well as in service rigs there for service they just fill up the back are until they are ready for them

Random but just curious as to why LAFD doesnt use the white light in the light bar like on the ALF trucks on all vehicles.
