Waterguy, I heard a rumor that LAFD is talking about buying a few type 3 and receiving 5 OES type 3's. Also i heard something about Quints? Tell me that's not true.

I spoke to a BC friend at LAFD. Yes they are getting Type 3's and OES Engines. He did not know what their assignments would be. If I hear any more info, I'll post it.

Would LAFD get hand me down type 3's from Cal-Fire first so that the department can learn how to operate the apparatus before getting new ones.

LAFD members are just like an other fire dept....we're kids in a candy store/little kids with big boy toys. If there new or used, we will take care of them (maintenance, wash, wax etc) to the highest standards that the LAFD tradition has had for over 100 + years.

the state is buying very few new rigs, my guess is that with consolidations and downsizing of a lot of departments they are turning the rigs back in due to not being able to staff them . also several city departments in both la and orange county are purchasing their own type 3 rigs and staffing them as needed thus creating a surplus of oes rigs

It will be interesting to see if OES buys some new type 3's this year.

The original 15 Type 3's were bought in 2007 and assigned as strike teams(5 units):

one group in the SanDiego County area inc one at Riverside City Fire

another group at L A County Fire, and another in the Bay area

They are Int/Rosenbauer models 500GPM

OES continues to buy 10 or so, HME/Ahrens Fox Type 1's short wheelbase, 1250 GPM units each year to replace older rigs

around the State

HME has a long term purchase agreement with OES type 18,and CAL FIRE type 35s

OES purchased 25 new Type-3 engines last year. At least some have already been delivered. No idea on assignments.

LaCo Fire tried to receive 5 more but where told LAFD will be receiving them.

That's interesting. Would have thought LAC would get them as they have no experience with wildland firefighting and operating brush engines.

I wouldn't say LAFD has no experience with wildland fires. My understanding is upper brace thinks its time for a change and branch out. Waterguy can you fill in the blanks.

In a Dec 2014 article by Alan Petrillo in Fire Apparatus Magzine, Chief Zakaris of CAL OES said the following:

Zagaris points out that Cal OES currently has a large fleet spread out around the state. "We have 114 Type 1 pumpers, 15 Type 3 wildland pumpers, 12 Type 1 water tenders, 13 swift water vehicles, 18 rescue system vehicles, six communications units, and a variety of command and other vehicles," he says. "Our Type 1 pumpers built by HME are designed to handle urban, suburban, rural, and wildland situations."

I cannot find anything on the OES site or possible truck builders mentioning the 25 Type 3s for OES.

HME is building the Cal-OES apparatus. Type 1 & Type 3. They are building 134 Type 3 engines. They are HME 34D Type 3 apparatus. There is a 2 min video on the HME website.

Excellant, saw the video on the new type 3s being built by HME

Interesting to see which departments receive them from OES.

Some will be for CAL FIRE, as they have built many Type 3s for them in recent contracts.

This should be a big help, given the drought and the increased threat of brush fires
