I've heard that both HR 56 and UR88 are getting new rigs. How far are they along in the process?

The LAFD is working on obtaining grant funding in order to purchase a replacement for HR 56 and USAR 88.  No funding has been obtained as of yet.

So with the possible purchase of a new USAR Rig for 88's should we assume that their current rig will go to 27's, 85's or 89's. and if that happens is there talk of replacing the two remaining USAR rigs

that are gonna be 15 years old real soon?

I'm not sure the larger Piece double axel USAR would fit in Station 27 due to the length, I did hear LAFD is in the process of looking to replace the crash trucks at LAX.

I did hear LAFD is in the process of looking to replace the crash trucks at LAX.

LAFD and LAWA have developed a two- phased plan to replace the aging ARFF fleet. Through this
action (Phase One), LAWA will procure four new ARFF vehicles and will retire two of the existing
ARFF vehicles, so that a total of six ARFF vehicles are available.

In a separate action, in approximately six months, staff will return to the Board with a request to
procure two more ARFF vehicles (Phase Two). Once six new ARFF vehicles are in place, LAWA will
retire the remaining two aged ARFF vehicles.

In November, LAWA approved the purchase of the first 4 Rosenbauer Panther Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting 3000 6x6 vehicles.

Why would LAX only have 6x6 arff rigs? Phoenix has nothing but 8x8 and they are a smaller airport with smaller aircraft. Only 1 747 flys in a day. I would think LAX would want to have the biggest arff trucks on the market. I believe Dallas has all 8x8 as well. Just wonderin!

Rumors are that there may be 4 additional crash rigs added to LAX's fleet maybe at 51's or 95's.

The argument provided is that this six ARFF vehicle configuration would provide the ability to handle two simultaneous aircraft incidents. As far as the biggest, it's more about providing the required firefighting foam capacity to mitigate an incident for the type of aircraft currently utilizing LAX. Whether it is on four rigs or six, it's about the capacity of the total response force. There are crew size configuration considerations in the context of this decision, but not going to go there.

USAR 88 is receiving a new rig. Not sure when. The current USAR will go to USAR 27.

My understanding is... Only USAR 88 is receiving a new rig. Since they are the only fully manned USAR with the miles on the rig. Yes it will fit in ST27.

Bid for both LAFD US&R and HR were awarded this week.  Pierce won the new US&R Rig and Miller Industries Sister Company on West Coast won the HR bid.  Same builder built the last two HR's.

Don't expect these anytime, build time is ~ 12 months.  Look for them to arrive at the shops around summer of 2016.

From the specs, no real change in appearance.  Should look the same on both.

The HR will be in a newer Peterbilt Cab and will be a 50 ton boom vs the current 40 ton boom.
