LAFD New Tiller Bid

92 posts in this topic

I've heard KME won the bid, but nothing official as of yet. I believe Pierce, Seagrave, and Spartan ERV bid as well.

Spoke with KME in San Diego and they are waiting for the bids to open. I don't believe the bids are open as of yet.

Any new truck news? Who won the bid? Do the shops already know where the trucks will be assigned?

Haven't heard any updates, wouldn't surprise me if KME was awarded the bid.

Gonna go out on a limb and say the following Trucks would most likely to

be the recipients of the new TDA's 10,21,26,33,37,66/89 & 95 for the 1st 7

proposed, but i wouldnt be surprised if it wasn't doubled considering LAFD

currently has 3 TDA's beyond 15 yrs of frontline service and 10 more rapidly

approaching that same status.

A friend of mine is doing the final inspection on his new Pierce. While he was at the plant he asked about LAFD. Yes Pierce also put in a bid. Waiting for the final yes or no.

Good for Pierce after losing the engine business but continued bad news for Seagrave.  They just are not able to compete and win bids.  The only business they get are those customers that want Seagraves, and willing to pay their crazy asking prices.

When will the new truck's be arriving at the shops and how many are in the order?

Pierce was just awarded the bid.

Do you have a reliable link or source to that information?

Yes I do have a source, straight from the LA City Online Bidding site.  It was posted by LA City on Monday.  Can't post a link as you have to be logged into the site in order to see open opporunities and awards.

Will they be mounted on Aarow XT Cabs?

judging from the pierce website, the only cabs offered in 100" widths are the Velocity and Impel models.

fireag , the 100 on the bid refers to the length of the ladder not how wide the cab is.however  there are arrow xt cabs that are 100 inches wide I am sure they will get them to match the arrow xt engines. also la city is a big fan of the tak 4 suspension which was only offered on arrow xt, dash cf and quantum models up until very recently it can now be had on the valocity

I was referring to a conversation on another thread on this website. LAFD is going with a 100" wide body to accommodate a beefier motor and a heavy duty ladder as opposed to the medium duty ladder. Plus, LA city has gotten away from the independent front suspensions as the new engines are all straight axle with leaf springs. It all depends on what the Heavy apparatus spec. maker put in the spec. I would hope function would trump appearance. I'm sure waterguy has all the inside info. The rest of us are merely speculating.

pierce will build anything la city wants, when you place a big order like this. they are getting their foot back in the door. I don't know what the 2015-16 budget has as far as new apparatus but you can be sure pierce will be giving them a good price to add on to the tiller order. and  I will check with my neighbor who works for city but I think all the arrow xt's have tak 4 and the guys really like it. kme does not offer it so the they have straight axle.

I work for city and we love the tak 4. But, in my discussion with some mobile mechanics (and waterguy can correct me if im wrong) there is less maintenance with a leaf spring design than any independent front suspension.  Hopefully the new trucks will have the tak 4. i know the tiller ride is awesome with the tak 4 as well.  If LAFD spec'd an independent front suspension, KME would not have won the bid for the engines.  LAFD has a top to bottom custom spec for every apparatus, if they cant meet the spec, they're out.  I'd like to see the spec, regardless of the cab or suspension choice, Pierce will be an improvement over Am. Lafrance.

Correct me if I am wrong but it is to my knowledge the new engines do not have independent suspension due to KME now offering it. As far as I know KME has a 5 year contract with the LAFD for engines. Once that contract is up I wouldn't be surprised if Pierce  wins the next bid for engines and trucks.

you are correct, there is a bit more maintenance with tak 4, but I was speaking to the safety aspect of it as far as handling and avoiding accidents ( we all know so-cal residents drive like idiots) it will be nice if city specs it. several depts. here in oc have it on their new tillers and lve it  we will have to see if waterguy has the inside scoop

It should be noted that the Arrow XT was initially designed for the LAFD contract of engines they got in the early-mid 00's.

My understanding is, Pierce and LAFD designed the Tak 4 per LAFD specs. And it became a succes with other dept's as well. Aren't theses the first Pierce Trucks LAFD has ever ordered? I remember Crown, Seagrave, Pirsch, Kenworth in the early'er days.
