it is a typo  the current order is for 7 new trucks. the contract is for 10 years, so all new tillers will be purchased from pierce, the current contract with kme expires in 2016. and this tag on contract allows la city to add engines and special vehicles to the order after the kme contract expires.  last I heard city was looking to replace some usars and haz mat units

Yes. Thats what a Pierce rep told my buddie. 10 years 70. I believe these are the first Pierce tillers to see service with the LAFD.

I am guessing these new rigs wont be ready for about 10 to 11 months an on the streets sometime early 2016

LAFD signed a 10 year contract with Pierce for 70 Pierce XT Tillers. A good friend is at Pierce now doing a accetence testing on his new rig. KME has the contract with the Eng until 2016.

That would be welcome news if it was even remotely accurate. No funding has been approved beyond the seven trucks on order right now, so unless Pierce is donating fire apparatus, it's purely speculative as to the quantity of fire apparatus that will be approved in future years. Moreover, given that there are 55 trucks in the LAFD fleet (42 active/13 reserve), 70 trucks in 10 years means the LAFD would retire 17 of these Pierce trucks within that time span, and it also assumes the age of every truck in the fleet would be less than 10 years.

 

There is no question you have good friends at Pierce, there are many fire apparatus currently exceeding the replacement cycle, and that there is much excitement over this contract award, but putting out unchecked info like this will only fuel rumors.

Any new specs on these new trucks?  Independent front suspension? Onan vs. PTO generator? New tools/equipment? Different compartment layouts?

With 55 trucks in fleet and 13 of them in reserve have some of the Simon Duplex truck already been scrapped? There were 6 93s, 10 95s and 4 96s that all add up to 20.

I don't think any of the Simon Duplex trucks have been scrapped. 95's and 69's are still running Simon Duplex trucks as their front line rig as well as a few other stations. The rest are in the reserve fleet.

At least two 1993 Simon LTIs have been salvaged. One of them a couple years ago that was stripped of everything for parts.

Pierce has been awarded the LAFD Aerial Ladder Truck contract.  It is a year to year contract that can be renewed annually by LAFD request.  It can be renewed up to 9 times (ie. possible 10 year contract).

 

Initial order is for 7 Aerial Ladder Trucks (2 from '12/'13 budget year and 5 from '13/'14 budget year).  The current budget year ('14/'15) funding has not been released.  When released, additional quantities could be ordered.

 

The total order of Trucks for the possible 10 year contract all depends upon how many are budgeted for in each fiscal year.

KME had a 5 year contract for the engines. This should be the last batch and then back to the bidding table.

Each of the seven Pierce Arrow XT tiller apparatus for LAFD features a Cummins ISX engine, and an overall length less than 56 feet. Thanks JNP!  However, I was wondering about photographs of the new trucks during construction. Like how Braun Northwest does with their rescues as they build them.
